ASEAN Mayor Forum approves five recommendations

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAKASSAR -- Mayor Forum of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN Mayors Forum/AMF) approved five recommendations as a collective agreement.

"The second day of the meeting resulted in five recommendations through the signing of the inscription on a marble stone weighing 18 tons," said Mayor of Makassar, Moh Ramdhan Pomanto, Wednesday (9/9).

The five recommendations as mutual agreements are among others, first is to support ASEAN community in the welfare of its citizens.

Second is to make ASEAN as regional, national, and local power, rooted in each city. Third is there must be pillars of the ASEAN community in the city. Fourth is to make an ASEAN Secretariat in Makassar. Fifth is to form specifically colleges with ASEAN standards.

"All delegations agreed on ASEAN secretariat, which is expected as central place of information. In addition, AMF is expected to take place in turn, in every city in ASEAN," he added.

Mayor of Seberang Perai, Malaysia, Maimunah Mochd Syarif, said that this was opportunity for a city to be competitive with other cities in ASEAN. He also asked other cities to continue to build smart city.

Secretary General of United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG-ASPAC), Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, said the meeting resulted in recommendations for better local governance.

"With the presence of 'local government', it would provide 'awareness' or consciousness of the ASEAN Community, especially in issues of infrastructure development and development of human resources, in facing the MEA," she said.
