REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The former head of Criminal Investigation Police (Bareskrim), Commissioner General Budi Waseso, was officially sworn in as head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in Jakarta, Tuesday (8/9). The inauguration which took place at BNN, Jakarta, was led by Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti.
"I am head of Indonesian National Police officially inaugurates you as head of National Narcotics Agency in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 139 M of 2015 dated 3rd September 2015 on Termination and Appointment In Position head of BNN," said Badrodin Haiti.
He said, he was optimistic that performance of BNN will be better under the leadership of Budi Waseso. It was based on character, leadership style and experience of Budi Waseso before. He said Indonesia has experienced a chronic phase and concern in drug abuse.
In Indonesia, there are 4.3 million people suffering from drug addiction or 2.2 percent of the total population of Indonesia. Badrodin also estimated that the losses due to drug abuse reached Rp 63 trillion, which includes the cost of drug spending, rehabilitation, the estimated price of the goods stolen.
"The impact is not good for the development of society, including the possibility of dropping out of school, moral degradation, physical and mental damage, neglect of children and families, and the threat of death due to overdose," he explained.
Indonesia, said Badrodin, is not only as a target country of drug sales, but also a target country of drug production. The Government had declared war on drugs.
"BNN should be able to implement an effective, innovative, and outstanding breakthrough in combating drugs. BNN need a reliable leader. Under the leadership of Budi Waseso, I believe BNN will be more qualified in eradication and prevention of drugs," he said.
