If smog still threaten in a week, local economic problems will occur

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of Committee II of Regional Representative Council (DPD) RI, Parlindungan Purba, appreciated President Jokowi in forming a task force to address the smog on Sumatra and Kalimantan. Parlin also asked the task force to work quickly.

"I asked the task force to immediately carry out the tasks, because if this issue is protracted, it will cause economic problems," Parlin said in the parliament complex, Jakarta, Monday (7/9).

Parlin said, the handling of the forest fires was still not maximized because there were some obstacles. Legal actions against individual burners were also not fully applied.

Therefore, he asked the government to always oversee the issue. Moreover, many residents in the affected areas suffered from respiratory disease. Local economic activities was also disrupted due to the thick smog.

In addition, he continued, besides providing masks, the government also needs to support in the form of free medical examination and treatment. Indonesia must have fire-fighting technology, both for peat and forest land.

"If the smog still threaten in one more week, I worry the local economy will be disrupted. The government should also socialize the fire prevention, "he added.
