REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GORONTALO -- The Forestry, Mining and Energy Office of North Gorontalo district, Gorontalo province, is conducting an intensive mangrove forest preservation program.
The Secretary of the office, Imanuel Ruruh, said on Wednesday that North Gorontalo's mangrove forests are spread over 2,799 hectares.
The largest forest area in the district is located in the Anggrek sub-district, reaching 1,089 hectares, and the smallest one is situated in the Tolinggula sub-district, with an area of 16 hectares.
Most of the mangrove forests are located in the protected forest area, Ruruh revealed.
According to him, the mangrove forest preservation program will be implemented over an area of 20 hectares, located in the Topi village of the Biawu sub-district.
A large number of mangrove forest destruction has taken place due to land being converted into ponds, Ruruh stated.
In addition, the mangrove tree wood is used as firewood, and the bark is used as fish tanner and herb.
The status of mangrove forests as a protected forest area in Gorontalo has been emphasized, considering the vast reduction in mangrove forests, owing to land conversion.
