Indonesians called to maintain good ties with Kinabalu's people

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kinabalu, Malaysia, Akhmad DH Irfan, called on Indonesians to establish and maintain good relations with the local people in order to promote a positive image of Indonesia in the international community.

The consul general of Indonesia in Kinabalu made the call at the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Indonesia Independence in Kinabalu, Malaysia, on Aug 17, according to a press release received by Antara here Tuesday.

"The 70th anniversary of the Indonesian independence is a momentum to establish and maintain a good relationship with the locals and respect the local laws and regulations. Do not break the law. Any offenses will tarnish Indonesia's image," he said.

The Independence Day commemoration ceremony held by the Indonesian Consulate General in Kinabalu was attended by about 3,000 Indonesians who live in Sabah including professionals, migrant workers, students of the Indonesia Kota Kinabalu School (SIKK).

The flag hoisting ceremony was conducted by 14 students led Major Jemmy Sitorus of the Indonesian National Military (TNI) in Sabah.

On the occasion, the consulate general in Kota Kinabalu awarded two Indonesians and one Malaysian citizen for their merits and services to the governments of Indonesia and Sabah besides for their roles in giving positive e contributions to the two peoples.

The awardees are Veronika Sedo Barek, an example volunteer in the education sector, and Harun Tafsir who has been serving as an example religious figure.

Meanwhile, Abd Naddin Shaidin is a Malaysian who is a journalist of Utusan Borneo Sabah, a pen pal who is used to writing articles on Indonesian culture and tourism.
