150 divers join underwater flag hoisting ceremony in Sabang

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- Some 150 divers took part in an underwater flag hoisting ceremony in Gapang Beach, Sabang, Weh Island, Aceh Province, on Monday, to commemorate the nation's 70th anniversary.

Marine Col Ali Bahar Saragih acted as the inspector of the ceremony, while Marine Captain Ricky Sandro was the commander of the ceremony.

Indonesia's Red and White flag was hoisted 15 meters under the water during the 45-minute ceremony.

After the ceremony, Col Ali Bahar presented tokens of appreciation to the divers participating in the event.

In fact, underwater flag ceremonies were organized simultaneously in Sabang, Malalayang beach in Manado, North Sulawesi, and Tapak Kuda beach in Ambon, Maluku Province, by the Indonesian Navy's Marine Corps on Independence Day, which falls on August 17.
