REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- State-owned companies should become the backbone of the nation's economy to ensure intensified and evenly distributed development, according to State Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Rini Soemarno.
For this purpose, the BUMN must improve their performance and offer better services, Minister Rini noted in a statement read out by the ministry's special staff Sudar SA, while commemorating the nation's independence, here, Monday.
"Indonesia's independence was realized because of the commitment of the people at that time to gain freedom from colonialism. Therefore, it is normal for the BUMN to realize the ideals of independence by becoming an agent for the nation's development," Rini affirmed.
The BUMN has carried out fundamental reforms for bringing about improvements in each respective field, according to the minister.
Currently, the total assets of BUMN reach Rp4.6 thousand trillion. It shows that the contribution of BUMN to the nation's economy is becoming increasingly significant in realizing strategic development projects.
So far, this year, 25 BUMNs have worked on 86 projects worth Rp318.5 trillion and US$5.1 billion.
The development projects include toll roads, steam power plants, airports and seaports, as well as oil and gas exploration and production.
She remarked that in the current era, a state enterprise could function independently.
"Synergy and collaboration among BUMN entities are a must to boost their significant growth. Now, Indonesia has 119 state enterprises engaged in nearly every industrial field," she stated.
Every director of BUMN must have several ideas to find partners and innovative means to establish business cooperation, collaboration, and synergy among state-owned companies.
"The courage to make a breakthrough and the capability to create opportunities for synergy are the key," she noted.
To mark the commemoration of the nation's 70th anniversary, the BUMN ministry has launched a public campaign themed "BUMN Is Present for the Country."
BUMN directors have been advised to conduct on-field surveys in 34 provinces to explore the existing areas of potential in the regions.
