Unemployment rate still high

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Manpower Minister M Hanif Dhakiri said the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia was still small. Youth unemployment rate was still high, as many as 3.96 million people (53 percent).

Low competitiveness and productivity of Indonesian workers was due to lack of education and job training.

"Indonesia is also experiencing problems of labor surplus but low educational background," said Hanif, on Monday, July 27.

He added that it needed the placement governance and protection of migrant workers needed to be improved. Currently the lack of safety supervision, health and welfare of workers and the industrial relations climate has not been fully controlled.

Facing the challenges and problems of employment, there were nine programs were conducted. The program was the strengthening of national manpower planning, the acceleration of labor competence, professional certification acceleration and expansion of formal employment opportunities.

In addition, other programs were strengthening the productive entrepreneurship, the creation of industrial relations which were healthy and productive, labor law enforcement, the improvement of migrant workers protection and employment services that were simple, transparent and accountable.

"Unemployment is one of the issues that received serious handling from the government through various policies and programs," said Hanif.
