GENAM: Alcohol drinking habits spread throughout Indonesia

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the National Movement Anti Miras (GENAM), Fahira Idris said the phenomenon of alcohol drinking habits among the younger generation also occured in almost all regions of Indonesia. Not only in big cities, in rural areas, younger generation also made alcohol drinking as a lifestyle.

In fact, she said, in some areas there is even a habit, whenever there is a celebration, people is compulsory to consummate liquor ranging from the elderly to young children.

According Fahira, the largest homework today is to change the mindset not only young children but also the parents about alcohol. Nowadays, added Fahira, GENAM is being focused on Eastern Indonesia with high level of alcohol consumption.

"What we are doing is the movement of awareness through danger dissemination of alcohol and to promote healthy life without alcohol to young people while urging policy makers to tighten the distribution of alcoholic drinks to Eastern Indonesia," said Fahira who also serves as Deputy Chairman of Committee III of The Regional Representative Council (DPD) Tuesday (21/7).

As information, based on survey results of R & D of Ministry of Health (2010), the province with the prevalence of alcohol consumption up 10% in urban areas, rural or both are North Sulawesi, North Sumatra, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Maluku, North Maluku, West Papua and Papua.

GENAM itself has branches in Bandung, Yogyakarta, Malang, Depok, Bekasi, South Tangerang, Depok, Jakarta, and Cianjur.

"God willing, in the near future we established chapter in Gorontalo. While in other areas I've started to send an appeal letter to the head of the region to initiate draft (raperda) on alcohol and to entire police chief urged to crack down on alcohol related offenses, especially that violate the Regulation 06/2015," Fahira said.
