Police Chief: The shooting in Tolikara is to enforce the constitutional law

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti revealed that in the case of Tolikara, Papua, on Friday, July 17, the police were forced to pull out shots because they did not heed the warning from the officer. When the negotiation efforts made, the mass still continued to pushing and throwing. Shooting effort was made to enforce the constitutional law.

"So, they did the shooting. The shooting which conducted by the police officers were a manifestation of the country's efforts to ensure the constitution should be upright. Because, (they) must not violate the constitution. So, if the 12 victims were shot, it was they risk, because they violated the constitution and human rights," said Police Chief, on Tuesday, July 21.

Furthermore, Police Chief requested that all parties could act with a cool head. He promised police would be firm with anyone involved in processing this case.

"I ask the religious leaders and their followers to respond to this case with a cool head. Leave everything to the police. Anyone who is guilty we will process, we will take legal action," he said.

Indonesia is a diverse country that tolerance must be built. The difference could possibly be a source of conflict, but it should be understood that this factor would be a unifying the nation.

"Let us build awareness of inter-religious harmony. We build up the tolerance because Indonesia is a pluralistic country, which is a compound consisting of various tribes, different religions, different customs, different languages. All have many differences," he said.
