Ministry: Lebaran traffic accidents drop by 70 percent

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Transportation Ministry revealed that the number of traffic accidents during this year's homebound Eid exodus dropped drastically by 70 percent to 251 cases from 965 recorded in 2014, an official of the ministry stated.

"The number of traffic accidents during the same period last year was 965 while this year, it dropped to 251 cases. We are actually surprised to see a significant decline in the number of accidents," Head of the Ministry's Eid Command Post Yudhi Sari noted here on Thursday.

She remarked that based on the percentage calculation, the drop in the number of road accidents involving Eid travelers reached 74 percent.

She revealed that the data was obtained from the Traffic Police Corps, as of Wednesday afternoon, July 16.

The number of dead victims also dropped from 214 in 2014 to 168 this year.

Sari stated that the number of victims who suffered from serious injuries also dropped from 312 in 2014 to 105 in 2015.

The number of victims suffering from minor injuries also declined from 1,187 to 337. Sari explained that the losses incurred due to the accidents totaled Rp708.3 million, down from 2.393 billion in 2014.

"The material losses dropped by 70 percent," she added.
