REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Six provinces in Indonesia will develop their bioenergy potential, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said noted here on Tuesday.
"The first project to develop the bioenergy potential will be implemented in Central Kalimantan Province. God willing, this program will be replicated in several other areas," Said affirmed.
He revealed that East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua, and West Papua are the other provinces that plan to develop their renewable energy potential.
"We will identify the areas, and then the management will also be set up," he remarked.
According to Said, several supporting programs in the field of bioenergy development will be implemented in each province after the signing of an agreement between the government and local administrations.
The program includes conducting feasibility study on the bioenergy project sites, building green areas on the provincial administration's land, and facilitating investment for the implementation of the program.
"This agreement will regulate the involvement of the private and business sectors to realize the implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) into a real program. The government cannot work alone. It should partner with the local administrations, businesses, and international institutions," Said added.
The cooperation program will involve planting trees and maintaining degraded land and mined areas, among others.
Said explained that the REDD+ Agency, the greenhouse gas emissions lowering agency, has identified about 49-70 million hectares of degraded land area.
"This program will take a long time to realize. If not implemented now, we will never achieve the target to develop bioenergy. Achieving success in developing renewable energy is only a matter of time," Said added.
