REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Police are ready to secure this year's regional elections despite securing funds worth only Rp500 billion of its total budget requirement of Rp1 trillion, National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti stated.

"Although there is still a shortage, yet we believe this problem can be solved," Haiti noted here on Monday.

According to Haiti, the police will cooperate with the Home Affairs Ministry to discuss the lack of funds.

He is optimistic that this obstacle can be overcome, as it is only a matter of time.

"The police's task is to maintain security and public order. Although there is a shortage, the police will secure the implementation of simultaneous regional elections," he affirmed.

Haiti asserted that simultaneous regional elections, which will be held in 269 areas, are a national agenda. He forecast that the conflicts could erupt ahead of the elections.

"I expect there will be conflicts due to various factors," he remarked.

According to Haiti, the police have mapped out potential areas where conflicts may occur.

He explained that during the mapping process, the police took into account the preparedness of the organizers, the past history of conflicts, political parties prone to conflicts, as well as candidates for regional heads and community characters.

Regarding areas prone to conflict, Haiti noted that the police have also formulated security strategies to anticipate conflicts.

"We have mapped all areas. The police are ready to secure this year's regional elections held on December 9," he emphasized.

Earlier, Haiti stated that the regions organizing simultaneous regional head elections have their own security threats.

The police will apply the same parameters in identifying the security threats, the police chief remarked during a cordial meeting with the executives of the Islamic Muhammadiyah organization on Sunday night.

"We will focus on the regional head elections at the district or municipality levels. We have already defined the parameters to identify possible threats," he noted.

Therefore, the police chief remarked that the people should not worry about the regional head elections, which will be simultaneously held across the country in December 2015.

He noted that the police are now ready to secure the elections.

"(We admit that) there are potential threats with regard to elections such as the presidential and legislative elections. It is a normal matter," he replied when questioned on the extent of security threat to the simultaneous elections.
