30 flights delayed due to fire at airport's longue

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta port operator PT Angkasa Pura II said 30 flights had been delayed for more than 30 minutes to a fire at JW Sky Lounge at 5.50am Sunday morning.

Head of Corporate Secretary and Legal Agus Haryadi said in a written statement to overcome the problem check-in process had been moved to Gate 2F for Garuda Indonesia domestic passengers and Gate 2D for international passengers.

"Garuda processed check-in manually as the system did not yet work. At 8.35am check-in counters had been reopened," he said.

Agus said Garuda flights to Yogyakarta, Pekanbaru, Batam, Ujungpandang, Semarang, Palembang and Pontianak had already been served after being delayed.

He said Garuda would also operate wide-body aircraft so that passengers for Surabaya and Denpasar who had been delayed could be taken in the day.

He said Garuda passengers had also been given a rescheduling facility.

"Other contingency actions include all overseas flight operations including check-in of Lion Air and Malindo are moved from initially at Terminal 2 to Terminal 3," he said.

Agus said international flights that had been delayed due to the incident include China Southern Flight 388, Xiamens Air Flight 870 and Malaysia Airlines Flight 712.

"Priority is given to passengers who have arrived at the airport and efforts were taken to fly them aboard rescheduled flights," he said.

The director general of air transportation, the director general of immigration, Soekarno-Hatta authorities chief, Airnav, Airlines and the police have taken coordination with regard to steps to handle the situation.

The fire broke out at 5.50am and firefighters arrived at 6.10 and the fire was able to be extinguished at 7.45am.

Gate 3 of Terminal 2E where the fire occurred had been closed but Gate 1,2 and 4 were normal and international passengers could use Gate 1 and 2 for check in while domestic passengers could check in at Gate 4.

"We apologize for the discomfort and we are striving hard to immediately put the situation back to normalcy again," Agus said.

Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.
