REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Zulkifli Hasan assessed that Army Chief of Staff General Gatot Nurmantyo is the right candidate for the next TNI commander's post.
"I know General Gatot. He is very professional and has several achievements to his name," Hasan stated here on Wednesday.
Hasan did not object to the selection of General Gatot, who hails from the Army.
"The appointment is the president's prerogative," he noted.
Hasan remarked that the selection of General Gatot as the candidate for the post of next TNI commander will not lead to disunity within the Indonesian Military (TNI).
Earlier, the House of Representatives Chairman Setya Novanto was hopeful that the candidate will ably coordinate with the three armed forces of the TNI.
"General Gatot is expected to meet the expectations of the society. I hope that he can coordinate with the three armed forces," he affirmed.
On Tuesday, President Joko Widodo submitted the name of General Gatot as the candidate for the post of next TNI commander.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Fahri Hamzah stated that the House of Representatives will follow up on President Jokowi's letter immediately.
"We will take it to the leadership meeting. Thereon, it will be taken to the Bamus (deliberation body) for a decision," he reported.
He remarked that Commission I of the House of Representatives usually conducts a fit and proper test, and it could possibly be done this week.
Meanwhile, the army's spokesman Brigadier General Wuryanto confirmed the appointment in Jakarta that day, saying that the decision was taken following in-depth consideration, as all possible candidates match the requirements and are also the worthy sons of the nation.
"I think the government knows better. They all meet the requirements, but it is him that he (the president) has chosen," he added.
