REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government has stated that stocks of rice to fulfill the needs of the community during the month of Ramadan until Eid al-Fitr were safe. However, it is feared by the increase consumption of rice on that months, that it is necessary to ask whether the stock of rice is still insufficient.
"Rice stock is safe until Eid al-fitr, but how about rice stocks after that, safe or not?"said an economist from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), Enny Sri Hartati to ROL, on Tuesday, June 9.
She argued government should make preparation as earlier as possible. She also added that 1.4 million tons was quite enough until Eid al-fitr but stocks after Eid must be strengthened.
Asked about the possibility of rice import, she said "import and fulfillment of rice stocks is a different matter," said Enny.
So according to her, imported rice was a way to meet the buffer stock of rice in Bulog (Indonesian Bureau of Logistics). She added that the reason why Bulog to import rice because stocks procurement in the country were not suitable with the price set by the government, where the rice price on abroad were much cheaper.
