REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAGELANG -- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recruits from the younger generation to preserve cultural heritage, Chairperson of UNESCO Indonesia Bernards Alens Zako said here on Monday.

He added that since 2008, UNESCO has been mobilizing 2,500 volunteers in 36 countries.

The volunteers campaign for the preservation of cultural heritage involving 52 local non-governmental organizations in each country, including Indonesia.

"One of their programs was the Borobudur Youth Forum 2015. They invited 50 youths from several provinces in Indonesia," Zako affirmed.

The 50 youths were from Pangandaran (West Java), Yogyakarta, Bangka Belitung, Semarang (Central Java), and a number of other places, he stated.

On June 5, they gathered at Borobudur Temple in Central Java to learn, discuss, and carry out some activities for the preservation of cultural heritage.

They cleaned the temple, visited the creative villages built by UNESCO, and set up the Borobudur Declaration, Zako pointed out.

The Borobudur Declaration contains seven terms, which include being able to actively preserve both the physical and non-physical aspects of cultural heritage as well as implement cultural values in means of livelihood, among others.

In addition, the young volunteers are committed to inspire others about the importance of preserving cultural values.

They also vowed to launch a comprehensive effort to empower youths through mentoring for the development of potential in local cultural programs carried out by government institutions and social organizations.
