REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former selection team (Pansel) of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Imam Prasodjo assesed that KPK leaders need to have immunity right from minor violations. It was to protect them from the criminalization which aims to weaken the anti-corruption agency.

Imam admitted that he had conveyed the proposal during the discussion with the heroine of KPK selection team today.

"That was spoken about it. If I personally, protection against KPK leaders are certainly not total. If, for example, KPK leaders do corruption and heavy violations, of course he could not shelter on immunity right," he said in the Main Building of State Secretariat, on Friday, May 29.

However, he added, KPK leaders need to be protected from minor offenses that carry penalties in five years, such as traffic violations. According to him, such violation could not be a tool to make KPK leaders as suspect.

He added, embedding a suspect status on KPK leaders only for minor offenses would be fatal for the anti-corruption agency itself.

"Everyone has the potential to make a mistake. But whether it has the potential to become a crime? That is the problem," he said.

Reflecting on the experience that befell non-active KPK leaders, Abraham Samad and Bambang Widjoyanto, Imam encouraged KPK officials to be given the right to limited immunity to protect them from any form of criminalization.
