REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Material losses inflicted by traffic congestion in Jakarta amounts to some Rp65 trillion annually, an official said.

"Data shows that the material losses caused by traffic jams in Jakarta reaches Rp65 trillion per year," Head of the Research and Development Agency of the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry Arie Setiadi Moerwanto revealed in a statement here on Friday.

Grave traffic congestion in the capital city has also caused psychological problems among commuters and decreased their productivity.

The government has set up a Cooperation Agency for the Development of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Cianjur, Karawang and Purwakarta, also known as BKSP Jabodetabekjurkarpur, to deal with issues of traffic jams and flooding in these regions.
