REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The government of Surabaya, East Java, is ready to meet the demand for meat in the run-up to the fasting month of Ramadhan by ordering slaughter houses to cooperate with cattle raisers in other regions.
"Since last February, we have ordered slaughter houses to cooperate with cattle raisers in other regions to invest in cattle raising. We hope we can benefit from the cooperation and meet the demand for meat in the fasting month and for Idul Fitri festivities," Mayor of Surabaya Tri Rismaharini said after a coordination meeting with the East Java Inflation Control Team (TPID) here on Thursday.
To stabilize the prices of basic commodities during the fasting month, the city government will launch market operations and hold bazaars. For its part, the city government has conducted a series of surveys in areas in dire need of basic necessities, she affirmed.
"When the prices increase, we will immediately hold bazaars in the areas. The commodities that will be sold in the bazaars will include rice, eggs and frying oil. As we are accustomed to doing this, the prices of basic commodities will be kept under control," the mayor remarked.
Furthermore, the city administration is also encouraging residents to grow vegetables in their own yards through urban farming, Rismaharini stated.
"We are encouraging them to grow vegetables not only to meet their own needs but also to control the demand for vegetables. Don't think Surabaya has no farmlands. We are producers of red chilies and watermelon. Our residents are also engaged in fish farming and salt production," she pointed out.
