REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Association of Ship Owners (INSA) protested an increase in port tariffs.

The tariff rise followed a decision of the Transport Ministry raising its target for non tax state income set at Rp8 trillion.

An INSA chairman Witono Suprapto said here on Monday ship owners protested the increase in a number of port tariffs such as shipping tariffs that rose 5 percent.

"A study abroad the increase in shipping tariff is only 3 percent, but here it is higher than 5 percent," Witono said.

He said the increase in port tariffs should be proportional with inflation rate.

He said port tariffs contribute 10 percent to operating cost.

He said INSA would seek a meeting with the Commission V of the parliament to convey its protest.

INSA has sent a letter to the government about its complaitn but there has been no answer, he said.

Meanwhile, sea transport Director General Bobby R Mamahit said the non tax state income target for the directorate general is up to Rp4 trillion this year.

"The increase could be close to five times," he said, adding last year the non tax state revenue from the sea transport directorate general was only Rp800 billion.

In order to achieve the target, there are a number of new components and addition of tariff units, he said.
