REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON -- Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla has invited European entrepreneurs to invest in the nation's cocoa sector.
Speaking at a dinner with European entrepreneurs who are members of the Federation of Cocoa Commerce in London on Friday evening, Kalla said cocoa bean production in Indonesia is the third largest in the world.
"I am here to reinforce the commitment of the Indonesian government to be one of the most competitive countries for investors, particularly in the field of the cocoa industry," Kalla noted.
He pointed out that some cocoa bean processing companies, such as Nestle, Mars and Cargill, have developed their businesses in Indonesia.
The Indonesian vice president added that the presence of such large companies indicates that foreign businesses are interested in investing in the country, especially in the cocoa beans processing sector.
"With an investment value of more than 600 million US dollars in plantations and crops, Indonesia continues to evolve into a choice for foreign investors," Kalla explained.
Indonesia is the third largest cocoa producer in the world, after the Ivory Coast and Ghana.
Therefore, Kalla said the government seeks to expand and improve the quality of cocoa in the country so that it can enter the international market, especially in Europe.
"Of all the world commodities whose prices have fallen, only cocoa prices have gone up. And of the three largest cocoa producing countries in the world, Indonesia is the most stable. This means that we have a significant potential in this field," said Kalla.
He reiterated that with the increase of cocoa production in Indonesia, there will also be an improvement in the living standards of cocoa farmers in Indonesia because cocoa is sold directly from farmers to processing industries.
