REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has initiated the establishment of an independent Indonesian Sugar Council (DGI) following the disbandment of the DGI late last year.

"The sugar council, which is formed by the Kadin, is independent in nature, but it should contribute by formulating and implementing the sugar policy at home," Deputy Chairman of Kadin for Regional Empowerment Natsir Mansyur stated here on Wednesday (13/5).

The dissolution of DGI at the end of last year did not help to solve the nation's sugar problem. Although the DGI did not have any significant role in the past, Mansyur is of the viewpoint that a new council is needed to coordinate the efforts to solve the sugar problem in the country.

"In a meeting held three weeks ago, the idea on the need for an institution to coordinate the efforts to handle the sugar problem in the country was raised. Therefore, we initiated the establishment of a Kadin version of an independent sugar council," he affirmed.

He explained that the organization will be independent in nature and will coordinate the efforts to handle the national sugar problem, which encompasses sugar production, distribution, and trade, among others.

The objective behind establishing a Kadin version of the sugar council is to serve as the government's strategic partner, which will provide inputs and suggestions regarding the national sugar policy both for the interests of the farmers and industry.

The Kadin version of the sugar council will monitor the farmers, distribution, and industry, particularly with regard to improving efficiency, distribution, and supply.

"Last year, raw sugar imports were abundant and made way into the consumer market. The national sugar requirement reaches 5.7 million tons, but domestic production only reaches 2.3 million tons. To handle this, the sugar council will have to play an active role," he added.
