REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- Qatar's Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammed Khater Al Khater assessed that the situation in Indonesia, under the leadership of President Joko Widodo, is very conducive for investment.

"The situation right now is very conducive. It is very important to attract foreign investors to invest in Indonesia, including in West Sumatra," Khater stated here on Wednesday.

According to the ambassador, investors from Qatar are also interested in investing in Indonesia, although the economic relations between Indonesia and Qatar have been established so far.

Khater remarked that Qatar has several businesses in Indonesia, including a banking network with 50 branches spread across all regions of Indonesia. It has also established business in the field of telecommunications.

Meanwhile, he stated that several Indonesians work in Qatar and are employed in various professional fields.

"The number of Indonesian people in Qatar is nearly 45 thousand, and most of them work in professional fields," he pointed out.

In addition, he stated that Qatar is also ready to assist the Indonesian people affected by the natural disaster.

"If our brothers in Indonesia are affected by the disaster such as the tsunami, Qatar will be ready to help them," he affirmed.

Khater noted that various social projects, with a budget of a billion rupiah, have also been carried out in West Sumatra.

Regarding the possibility of investment in West Sumatra, Khater said he will explore it first.

"We do not know the potential of this area. Hopefully, this visit will give us the information related to the assessment of cooperation in various fields," he remarked.

However, Khater believes that sound economic cooperation between Qatar and the West Sumatra Government can be established.

The trade deficit between Indonesia and Qatar in 2013 amounted to US$1.39 billion, with the total value of Indonesian exports to Qatar reaching US$95.37million. Meanwhile, the total value of Indonesia's imports from Qatar amounted to US$1.48 billion.
