REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUKABUMI -- Some 613 foreigners employed by various industries in Sukabumi district, West Java province, have been granted working and residential permits giving them legal protection, a local government official said.

"The total number of applicants has increased from 305 in 2004 to 613 this year," Head of Sukabumi district's Workforce and Transmigration Office Aam Amar Halim said here Tuesday (7/4).

Talking about granting working and residential permits for expatriates, Halim told journalists that most of the foreign workers employed in Sukabumi are from Japan, South Korea, China, and several Middle Eastern countries.

"Sukabumi's Immigration Office will not be reluctant to deport any foreign worker found guilty of violating our laws," he stressed, adding that the majority of them are employed by industries and in a steam-fueled power plant construction project.

Meanwhile, Head of the Law Enforcement Unit of Sukabumi district's Immigration Office Markus Lenggo noted that 17 foreign nationals have been deported for violating Indonesia's immigration regulations.

The deportees consisted of 11 Chinese nationals, two Dutch nationals, and four Hong Kong visitors, he added.
