REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said six people had been found dead in a landslide that took place in Cimerak Hamlet, Tegal Panjang Village Cireunghas subdistrict, Sukabumi, West Java, on Saturday.

"Six residents were killed and four others are still missing," Head of the Information Data Center and Public Relations of the BNPB, Sutopo Purwono Nugroho, said in press release made available to Antara here on Sunday.

He said that the landslide, besides claiming lives, also caused material losses where 10 houses were heavily damaged.

The landslide was triggered by heavy rains that showered the area from 12 a.m. midday to 11 p.m on Saturday.

Now, related agencies' workers are in the location to carry out evacuation, he said.

"In the locations, there are already officials from the local BNPB office, military personnel and police apparatuses, rescuers, the Indonesian red-cross workers, volunteers and others," he said.

Previously, a landslide hit Jaraksari village in Wonosobo District, Central java, killing a woman, Laila Musbechi (31).

Jaraksari Village Head Nuri Utomo said heavy rains in the afternoon triggered the landslide.

Local volunteers and some military as well as police personnel helped evacuate Laila and rushed her to a nearby hospital.

"The woman was killed after she got crushed under large rocks that rolled down a three-meter-high hill behind her house," he explained.

Sudarto, a neighbor of the deceased, said the landslide occurred at around 1:45 P.M. local time.

Laila lived with her two children. Her husband works on Kalimantan Island.
