REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SEMARANG -- Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo wants all schools in the province to apply a five-day school week to give students more time to meet with their parents.

"I want to see the schools applying a five-day school week because the quality of meetings with their parents is currently low," he said here on Sunday.

Parents must improve the quality of meetings with their children outside school hours so that communication among family members could run well, he said.

"I imagine if they can spend weekends with their parents, the communication between both of them will run well," he said.

He noted that many schools in Jakarta had applied a five-day school system, while only a few schools in Semarang had applied it.

"I feel pity for students including my children to go school six days a week," he said.

The governor said he would hold talks with several parties to discuss a plan to apply a five-day school system in the province.

A special study must be conducted before all schools in Central Java applied a five-day school system, he said.
