Banggai earthquake not potential to cause tsunami

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDARLAMPUNG -- An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale in Banggai, Central Sulawesi, at 6.16 am local time on Monday did not have potential to cause a tsunami.

Kotabumi Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Yuharman said the epicenter of the quake was at 0.52 degree southern latitude and 122.36 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km.

It was located at Minahasa peninsula, or 58 km northeast of Banggai, 132 km southeast of Boalemo, 140 km southwest of Gorontalo, and 1.836 km southeast of Jakarta.

Also a 4.19 am on Monday, another earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted Malang district in East Java but did not have potential to cause tsunami.

The epicenter was located at 9.78 degrees southern latitude and112.82 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km, or some 174 km southeast of Malang, 185 km southwest of Lumajang, 190 km southeast of Blitar, 276 km southeast of Surabaya, and 777 km southeast of Jakarta.
