REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's jewelry exports in the past year jumped 73.4 percent to US$948.6 million, with much of the exports going to Hong Kong and China.
"Hong Kong and China are among our main jewelry markets," Director General of the National Export Development of the Trade Ministry Nus Nuzulia Ishak said in a press statement released on Wednesday.
The exports were boosted by a 2,166.46-percent surge in demand for jewelry made of other precious stone worth US$323.3 million, she stated.
The jewelry made of other precious stone accounted for 39.48 percent of the overall jewelry exports that reached US$1.83 billion.
According to her, jewelry has become one of Indonesia's potential export commodities and the Trade Ministry has been actively promoting it. For instance, among others measures, it participated in the Hong Kong International Jewellery Fair 2015, which took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from March 4 to 8.
Being a hub of international flight services and world-renowned Asian model, Hong Kong is a potential market for Indonesian jewelry, she remarked.
"International businesses are not reluctant to make transactions in Hong Kong. This serves as a huge opportunity for Indonesia to attract buyers who come not only from Hong Kong but the rest of the world as well," she added.
