REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TIMIKA -- The largest American copper and gold mining company in Indonesia PT Freeport has contributed positively to empower the people of Papua, particularly those residing around the mining area in Mimika district, according to a legislator.

"Our visit here is to oversee the extent to which PT Freeport has contributed to the welfare of the Papuan community, and we found that the mining company, in reality, has made a positive contribution to the people here," House of Representatives' Commission I spokesman, Asril Hamzah Tanjung, noted here on Tuesday.

Asril led a team from the House's Commission I to visit Mimika district, where Freeport is located, to evaluate the contribution made by the American mining company for the welfare of the people of Papua.

He said that while visiting numerous schools and hospitals, and the Nemangkawi Institute of Mining in Kuala Kencana, they found that PT Freeport has made a significant contribution.

"But, so far, many parties outside Papua do not know what the copper and gold mining company has done to empower the people of Papua," he noted.

The Gerindra Party politician opined that the contribution made by PT Freeport for the welfare of the Papuans was considered reasonable as the company has been operating for more than 40 years in Mimika district, Papua.
