REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SLEMAN -- President Joko Widodo's decision to drop the candidacy of Comm. Gen. Budi Gunawan as the national police chief has been realistic, an observer has said.
Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission-National Police Independent Consultative Team Ahmad Syafii Maarif made the statement here on Thursday after the President dropped Budi Gunawan's nomination.
On Wednesday (Feb 18), President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) decided to propose Comm. Gen. Badrodin Haiti as the new National Police (Polri) chief candidate to replace Comm. Gen Budi Gunawan whose candidacy ran into controversies.
Maarif believes that as Badrodin Haiti is more acceptable to all parties, his nomination will settle any doubt about who will lead the police.
"Badrodin Haiti is eligibile to become a police chief and he is also acceptable to all parties, both inside and outside the police institution," Maarif explained.
Budi Gunawan was previously nominated as the sole police chief candidate by the President. However, he was later named suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission in an alleged graft case.
The House of Representatives had, however, approved his nomination.
