REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- General chairman of Hati Nurani Rakyat (Hanura) party Wiranto said there was no need for Government Regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to save the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) only because its chairman Abraham Samad was facing a legal case as a suspect.

"Why is KPK not safe? I think, Perppu is not necessary. KPK is in no problem," Wiranto said last night.

He said the legal case faced by Abraham Samad was an individual problem not institutional, therefore, the case should be settled individually.

Abraham Samad was named a suspect by police amid protracted conflicts between KPK and police leaders. Abraham Samad was charged with involvement in the falsification of documents for the passport of a young woman Feriyani Lim in 2006.

"Don't confuse individual problem with institutional affairs. Everyone should see that the legal case faced by KPK leaders is individual problems, nothing to do with KPK and police as institutions," he said.

Meanwhile, a political observer from the University of Pelita Harapan (UPH) Victor Silaen called for exemption of KPK leaders from past legal case until they end their term as KPK commissioners. Victor said Perppu is needed to regulate the exemption to allow them to carry on investigation of corruption cases they are handling.

He said without Perppu, KPK would be paralyzed and many of KPK staff officials would resign as they had said earlier.

Meanwhile, Democrat party faction secretary Didik Mukrianto urged President Joko Widodo to put more priority to abiding by the Constitution and hearing the people aspirations in dealing with the KPK-police conflict.

"A president is charged with ability to take a wise and right decision in time of crisis -- abiding by the law while hearing the peoples' aspirations," Didik said. He said the president is facing problem over the KPK police conflict related to legal, political and social aspects.

He said the way is open both legally and politically for the president to act immediately. "Politically the president has the authority to take the right step in the name of law. The Parliament also has given its approval," he said .

He said the president has been known to be tactical in making a decision and taking a policy , but he seemed to be too slow in dealing with the conflict involving the two law enforcement agencies. He warned that too long situation of uncertainty could lead to legal, political and social chaos that could disrupt economic stability. "The people have suffered badly due to oil fuel price hikes," he said.
