REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MATARAM -- The West Nusa Tenggara provincial legislative assembly has supported the government's plan to stop sending Indonesian women to work as house maids abroad.
"It is time for the government to stop sending Indonesian women to work as house maid abroad," deputy chairman of the Commission V of the provincial legislative body HMS Kasdiono said here on Tuesday.
President Joko Widodo has said the government plans to stop sending Indonesian women to work abroad as house maids.
Kasdiono cited national dignity as the reason for not sending Indonesian women to work as house maid abroad.
Many Indonesian house maids have fallen victim of violence and sexual abuses by their employers, he said.
"If we could not entirely stop the government could regulate moratorium on sending workers to countries that could not guarantee protection for the workers," he said.
Indonesia has millions of migrant workers mainly house maids abroad such as in Malaysia, Middle East and Hong Kong.
