REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- Riau Provincial capital of Pekanbaru will soon be declared in a dengue outbreak emergency condition where dengue cases have doubled, a health official said.
"Now we are waiting for the official letter of the Pekanbaru mayor which will state that the city is in a emergency condition (KLB)" Head of the city's Health Service Helda S Munir said here on Tuesday.
She said last year when dengue fever broke out in the city, the number of cases in the January - February only reached 60. Now the dengue cases have attacked 160 victims.
"The significant increase has met the criteria for an outbreak to be declared emergency," Helda said.
She said that Pekanbaru was also declared a city in a dengue emergency condition.
Dengue cases in Indonesia, a tropical country with a fast-growing population, have increased from time to time, and the mosquito-borne disease has become a major killer in the country, and therefore, the people in various provinces have been cautioned to stay vigilant.
North Sulawesi, Riau, and East Java are among the numerous provinces where dengue fever cases have been reported to be on the rise.
In North Sulawesi, three people have reportedly died of dengue fever, which was transmitted by Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes.
"Of the three fatalities, two were reported in the provincial city of Manado and one in Sitaro Islands district," North Sulawesi Health Office spokesperson Grace Punuh reported in Manado on Thursday.
