REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian composer and singer Rinto Harahap passed away at the age of 65 in the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore, on Monday, February 9, night.
"Surely, we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return, our father, Rinto Harahap, passed away in the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, on Monday, at 10:15 p.m. local time," Thariq Mahmud Eben, the husband of late Rinto Harahap's daughter, Cindy Claudia, said.
Thariq confirmed the death of his father-in-law through his account on Path, which is a social networking and photo-sharing service that Antara quoted here on Tuesday. His body was flown in from Singapore and brought to the mourning house in South Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to political observer Fadjroel Rachman, Rinto became famous among several Indonesians when he joined "The Mercy's" band in the 1970s. "Don't Expect", "Rose" and "Let Me Alone" were among his evergreen hits at that time.
Senior politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Pramono Anung and puppet master Sujiwo Tejo offered their condolences on the demise of the famed composer using their respective social media accounts.
Born in Sibolga, North Sumatra Province, on March 10, 1949, Rinto Harahap formed "The Mercy's" band along with his friends, Charles Hutagalung and Reynold Panggabean, in the 1970s
