REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Police chief detective Comr.Gen Budi Waseso has emerged as a strong favorite to take over as new police chief a position left vacant after dismissal of Gen. Sutarman before he ends his term in October.
Budi Waseso, in the center of the conflict between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and police, was promoted to a three star general or comr. general on Thursday.
"Whatever it is when you are given a duty it is a mandate. A soldier has to be ready including me," head of the police Criminal Research Department (Bareskrim) said.
The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) said earlier it has prepared a list of candidates including Budi Waseso amid reports of cancellation of installation of Comr.Gen. Budi Gunawan.
Budi Gunawan was earlier proposed by the president as the sole candidate to replace Gen. Sutarman and was approved by the Parliament.
However, two days before the Parliament gave its approval, KPK said it had named Budi Gunawan a suspect in corruption case.
The KPK announcement led to dragging conflict between the anti graft agency with police.
Budi Waseso refused to comment much on his chance to climb over a number of his former seniors among three star generals.
"Why don't ask Kompolnas about that," he said.
Earlier a Kompolnas commissioner M Nasser said it had prepared a list of candidate for new police chief.
The five candidates are deputy police chief Comr.Gen. Badrodin Haiti, Comr.Gen. Dwi Prayitno, Comr.Gen. Putut Bayuseno, Comr.Gen. Anang Iskandar and Budi Waseso.
