REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDAR LAMPUNG -- A doctoral thesis titled, "Press Freedom, Law, and Politics in Post-Soeharto Indonesia" by Law Faculty of Airlangga University (Surabaya, East Java) academician Herlambang Perdana Wiratraman will be discussed in Japan's Kyoto University on February 19.

The doctoral thesis report was completed at the Van Volenhoven Institute Leiden, the Netherlands, Herlambang stated during a press release received by Antara here on Wednesday.

The thesis will be discussed by Dr Kate McGregor, a history expert from the Melbourne University, and it will be moderated by a researcher from the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (SEAS), Kyoto, Jafar Suryomenggolo.

The research report reviews the Indonesian law and press freedom from the socio-legal point of view.

According to Herlambang, the political transition after Soeharto's authoritarian regime has been deeply affected by the governance model of decentralization, which has led to more serious attacks on journalistic works.

Extra-judicial killings (murder without trial), physical violence, convictions for journalism, and other attacks through the formal judicial process and other forms, including a system of impunity, have led to difficult situations in the field of journalism.

Violence against journalists in the era of decentralization in Indonesia have been affected by local political machinations on economic issues.

In the meantime, the law enforcement process to safeguard journalists is easily undermined and not respected with regard to the legal system itself, which provides significant influence.

Currently, Herlambang is a visiting research fellow at the Nagoya University, Japan.
