REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, HANOI -- The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) and Boeing signed a memorandum of collaboration on supporting Vietnam in achieving the regulatory and safety standard required for direct flights between Vietnam and the United States.

Under the agreement, Boein will help Vietnam achieve Category 1 approved by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Once the FAA Category 1 status is achieved, Vietnamese commercial airlines are able to offer direct passenger and cargo flights between Vietnam and the United States, CAAV said on its website on Tuesday.

According to the agreement signed in Vietnam's capital Hanoi on Monday, Boeing will support the CAAV in completing the Corrective Action Plan and assist in training for CAAV personnel.

Addressing the signing ceremony, Lai Xuan Thanh, head of CAAV, said the country national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and other air carriers are looking forward to the achievement of Category 1. The U.S. market is very important to Vietnamese businesses, said Thanh.

The CAAV targets to get the Category 1 by the fourth quarter of 2015.

Ralph Boyce, president of Boeing Southeast Asia, said with the support of Boeing, CAAV is expected to reach the goal, which is considered a new milestone in the country's aviation sector.
