REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has asked the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) to clarify its reason for dismissing General Sutarman, the current national police chief, from his post.

"They must issue a clarification. We need to know why the Kompolnas wants to dismiss the national police chief now. This needs a clarification to prevent the case from being turned into a bad example," Deputy Chairman of the KPK Adnan Pandu Praja said here on Thursday, adding that he was a member of the Kompolnas for six years.

He made the remarks at a meeting with volunteers of two-finger salute who visited the KPK building to seek support for their call. The volunteers had earlier urged President Joko Widodo to withdraw his nomination of Commissioner General Budi Gunawan for the post of the national police chief.

General Sutarman will enter retirement only in October 2015. However, President Joko Widodo submitted a proposal to the House of Representatives (DPR) last Friday (January 9), nominating Gunawan, who is chief of the national police's education institute, as the sole candidate for the post of the national police chief.

The president took this step without consulting with the KPK and the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center (PPATK), institutions that would have conducted a background check.

At its plenary meeting on Wednesday, the DPR agreed to Gunawan's candidacy for the position to replace Sutarman. The agreement was reached after the DPR leadership held a consultation meeting with leaders of factions in the parliament.

On January 12, the KPK named Budi Gunawan as a suspect in an alleged graft case related to suspicious transactions.
