REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- House of Representatives approves Budi Gunawan as the new Police Chief replacing Sutarman. Budi Gunawan was recently named as a suspect of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
"After discussing with Commission III, plenary session approves Budi Gunawan as new Chief Police," the Chairman of Plenary Session at parliament, Taufik Kurniawan, said on Thursday, January 15.
However, Kurniawan said that he still noted objection from Democrat Party Faction. The faction asked parliament to postpone the approval of new police chief appointment. The Chairman of Democrat Party Faction Edhie Baskoro said that Budi Gunawan was a suspect. "Appointing Gunawan as Police Chief will stain Indonesia," he said. It will be the first time in Indonesian history that the president appoints a suspect as police chief.
Credibility becomes the second reason. Democrat considers that it is hard to get people's trust. "People will see that president and parliament do not support corruption eradication," he said.
