REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) condemns the attack towards Paris office of French magazine Charlie Hebdo. He suspected the attack was conducted by extremists.

"MUI condemns the attack towards the French magazine. The attack violates humanitarian and Islam value which is blessing for all," the Head of Foreign Relations of MUI, Muhyidin Junaidi, said on Thursday, January 8.

He said that the deadly violent force did not represent Muslim eventhough they shouted "We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad" and "God is Great" in Arabic ("Allahu Akbar") before shooting. He emphasized that Muslim did not the right to kill someone's life.

As cited from BBC, the satirical weekly has courted controversy in the past with its irreverent take on news and current affairs. It was firebombed in November 2011 a day after it carried a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.

"We object the content of the magazine, but killing is not how Muslim act," he said. "We hope international does not generalize the incident as Islam. We are worried of anti-Muslim act."
