REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Board of Commissioners of state lender PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BRI, appointed Asmawi Syam as the acting president director of the company.

Syam replaced Sofyan Basir, who is now the president director of the State Electricity Company (PLN), Financial Director of the BRI Achmad Baiquni said here on Monday (5/1).

"On Friday (January 2), the Board of Commissioners appointed Pak (Mr) Asmawi Syam as the acting president director till the definitive election for the post is held at the Shareholders General Meeting in March," Baiquni stated.

According to him, the post of the acting president director (Plt) will not affect the performance of the BRI, which is currently listed as the largest net profit bank in the country.

Despite his Plt post, Syam's authority is similar to that of the managing director, Baiquni explained.

"Syam has the same authority as the managing director. Otherwise, it will only be a waste of time," he remarked, adding that Syam is now 58 years old and has been one of the directors of the BRI since September 2007.

Before being appointed the acting president director, Syam was the BRI's director of institutional business. He has held various managerial positions in the bank, including those of the head of the general business division and the head of the consumer banking division.

In 1979, Syam obtained his Masters of Management degree from the University of Padjadjaran in Bandung, West Java.

Baiquni added that the appointment of Syam as the BRI acting president director has been reported to the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK).
