REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEIRUT -- Lebanon announced Thursday an official three-day period of mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Omar Karami.

Former Prime Minister Karami passed away overnight Wednesday at the age of 80 after a long battle with illness.

In a statement announced by his office, Prime Minister Tammam Salam said that Karami "left behind him a great legacy that will live forever in the memories of the nation."

During the official mourning, flags on every public building would fly at half-mast for three days from Friday, he said.

Karami was PM for the first time from December 1990 until 13 May 1992, when he resigned due to economic instability.

He was sworn in again on October 26, 2004 and resigned on April 19, 2005 amid protests following the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

An official and popular burial will be organized for the deceased and his body will be buried Friday noon at the family's cemetery in Tripoli's Bab al-Ramel neighborhood.
