REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- The Indonesian Army is awaiting land assistance from the West Papua provincial government to set up a regional military command in the province, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo said.

"When land becomes available, we will build on it," Gen. Nurmantyo stated while inspecting a main armament system expo here on Friday.

The Army will build a regional military command station only after the local government allocates land close to the gubernatorial office here.

The location of the regional military command station must not be far from the seat of the local government, he added.

However, if land is not available, Nurmantyo noted, it cannot be said when the West Papua regional military command will be established.

Papua, which is three and a half times the size of Java Island, has only one regional military command, four municipal military commands, 14 district military commands, and 113 sub-district military commands.

The three-day expo has on display a variety of combat instruments owned by the Indonesian Army and agricultural tools used by soldiers on civic missions.

After inspecting the expo, the Army chief of staff who arrived in Papua on Thursday returned to Jakarta.
