REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM -- The Hang Nadim International Airport Authority said work will start in 2015 to build its new second passenger terminal.
The capacity of the first terminal is no longer enough with the growing users, head of the general division of the airport Suwarso said here on Sunday (21/12).
The airport operator said in the first 10 months of this year there were 4.6 million passengers arrivals and departures using the terminal.
The number is expected to exceed 5 million in the whole of this year.
"While building the second terminal, the first terminal would also be expanded ," Swarso said.
Dwi Djoko Wiwoho, chief spokesman of the Batam Management Board (BP Batam) that owns the airport said the airport would have a capacity of serving 16 million passenger a year.
Each terminal would have a capacity of 8 million passengers, Dwi Djoko said.
He said the expansion of the capacity is urgent as the number of passengers grows 13 percent annually.
In 2012, the number of passengers was recorded at 3.8 million with 84 flight per day.
The number of passengers rose to 4.1 million in 2013 with 104 flights per day.
"This year , the number is estimated to reach 4.3 million. Therefore, immediate expansion is needed," Dwi said.
