Govt boosts sugar industry to produce refined sugar

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ministry of Trade urges sugar industry to upgrade capacity of their companies. The move is aimed to produce refined sugar to comply with national demands coming from food and beverage industries.

"I work with Minister of Industry and Minister of Agriculture to upgrade sugar industry in order to produce refined sugar," Minister of Trade Rachmat Gobel said on Monday, December 15.

The improvement can start by elevating technology and increasing the quality of sugar cane. Gobel said that the move needed at least 1.5 trillion IDR.

However, he admitted that he could not force national food and beverage companies to use domestic sugar. Gobel said that each company needed some types of sugar which differed in standard and quality.

"Local sugar production must meet their standard," he said.
