REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government should improve small-scale fisheries to create the primary base for the world maritime axis concept, said Head of the Marine Campaign of Indonesia Greenpeace Arifsyah M Nasution.

The purpose of the improvement should be to ensure a sustainable and equitable fisheries system, Arifsyah stated here on Monday (1/12)

"Hence, traditional fishermen can get the right to warranty of the best and fair fish price," he noted.

Arifsyah remarked that the fishing community was a key to realizing the maritime axis concept. "The frontline of maritime axis is fishermen. It cannot succeed if traditional and small-scale fishermen do not benefit," he added.

He pointed out that the welfare should cover all fishermen. "If all fishermen do not benefit, their number will constantly decrease, because then people will come to believe that fishing is a bad profession," he stated.

He explained that the government should improve fishermen's welfare through proper wages, good work environment, and social warranty.

"They have a right to education guarantee, security and safety assurance, and legal protection," he emphasized.
