REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Abraham Samad has expressed his concern about President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's decision to appoint HM Prasetyo as attorney general since he is a political party member.

"It is highly regrettable since he comes from a political party," Samad said in a short message text on Thursday.

Prasetyo is a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) from the National Democrat (Nasdem) Party for the 2014-2019 period. Born in Tuban, East Java, on May 9, 1947, Prasetyo had been a junior attorney general for general crimes in 2005-06. He was appointed to the post of attorney general based on Presidential Decree No. 131/2014. President Jokowi signed the decree only on Thursday morning.

During his career as a public prosecutor, Prasetyo had been the chief of the East Nusa Tenggara Public Prosecutor's Office from 1999 to 2000. He served as the inspector of personnel affairs and general tasks at the Attorney General's Office from 2000 to 2003, and as the chief of the South Sulawesi Public Prosecutor's Office from 2003 to 2005.

He later entered politics. He was appointed on the Nasdem Party's advisory board in 2011, and he joined the party's law-making body in 2013. Prasetyo has replaced previous attorney general Basrief Arief whose tenure ended with the end of the working period of the United Indonesia Cabinet II.

Earlier, a number of figures were widely tipped for the post of attorney general. They included Deputy Head of the Presidential Working Unit for the Supervision and Management of Development Mas Achmad Santosa, Head of the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center Muhammad Yusuf, former minister of law and human rights Hamid Awaluddin, Deputy Attorney General Andhi Nirwanto, and Attorney General for Special Crimes Widyo Pramono.
