REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUSA DUA -- The Joko Widodo's government want to transform Indonesia to be one of the most competitive nations in Asia in 2025 said Minister of Public Work and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimulyono in 1st IRF Asia Regional Congress & Exhibiton, in Bali.

"The President and the Government of Indonesia aims to bring Indonesia to be one of the most competitive nations in Asia in 2025, in which the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing plays pivotal roles in providing and managing basic infrastructures, including national road network," he said n a statement read by Waskito Pandu, Head of Research and Development Agency, Ministry of Public Work and Housing, Nusa Dua, Monday (17/11).

To achieve the aim, he said, the government has developed a set of policies to improve connectivity by providing reliable, integrated, and sustainable road network to support our national economic development.

Basuki explained, the current development of road networks in Indonesia was based on The 2015-2019 Road Development Strategic Plan.

Based on the plan, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing was carrying out the functions of regulatory, advisory, development, and supervision to ensure that all networks meet the criteria of reliability, integration and sustainability.

For the ministry, reliability of road networks measured by the level of service in supporting economic activities. It also includes adaptability in facing challenges caused by natural disaster such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and even tsunamies.

The concept of integration was associated with rate of connectivity among regions, cities, zones and development areas. In this context, Indonesia pays special attention to the remote and isolated areas in the country.

Sustainability was geared to provide a continuous service of the network and, at the same time, to gradually apply the concept of green road technology by improving road construction and operation to reduce carbon emission and energy consumption.

Considering the diversity in geographic, climate, geological and topographical features in various regions in Indonesia, he said, it would not be realistic for the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing to set a single road standard and specification.

Consequently, road development in Indonesia is very complex as changing one or more parameters will cause significant problem to road structures. Therefore it is imperative to see a single case of failure comprehensively, in order to identify main cause of the problem precisely, before formulating a proper recommendation to avoid similar problem in the future.

"I believe that international cooperation will be very advantageous for Indonesia to increase the country’s performance in road development. International cooperation will enable us to enhance knowledge, improve technology, as well as to develop policy and research-based solution," he said.

Construction of roads and bridges throughout Indonesia, he added, were the main focus of our new government. All ministries are required to facilitate private sector’s investment in infrastructures in Indonesia. There are three areas to be addressed to increase investment inflow: bureaucracy, infrastructure and political stability.

Currently, various policies have been drawn by the new government, focusing on the improvement of the investment service system.

"One of those is to integrate and shorten investment procedures by providing one stop service system, we call it “Pelayanan Satu Pintu”. It is expected that investment index will increase as simple and transparent process will invite more investors. The system will also avoid unofficial fees and in turn will make investment in Indonesia become easier," he said.
