REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo held a teleconference with people in several parts of Indonesia on Monday evening after he was sworn in as the seventh president of Indonesia earlier in the day.

Jokowi, as the president is popularly called, started the teleconference at the State Palace at around 03.30 p.m. with people in Bali, Manado, Meulaboh, Manokwari, Manado, Sentani, Balikpapan, Blitar and Jambi.

In the teleconference, Jokowi received congratulations from people from all walks of life on his being inaugurated as the country's seventh president.

Residents of Meulaboh in the westernmost Indonesian province of Aceh asked Jokowi to pay more attention to fishermen's life, while people in the North Sulawesi provincial capital of Manado appealed to the president to promote the education sector.

"We should educate our children as properly as possible. Don't teach them not merely mathematics but good character as well," the president said.

Several social media volunteers were also present at the 30-minute teleconference.

Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla were sworn in as the president and vice president, respectively, of Indonesia on Monday before the plenary meeting of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).
